Today I have a tutorial that is super-duper easy! You don’t even need to know how to sew to make this clip. You just need to be handy with a lighter and able to use a glue gun.
At my house I am a master with a glue gun, like a glue gun ninja! I have wanted to make some new clips, bows can get tiring. While digging through a bargain fabric bin i found a roll of silk for like 32 cents. LIGHTBULB!!! I bought some more silk and grabbed a 2 dollar bag of beads.
Remember you cannot screw up this tutorial so if you have shied away from DIY flower clips, fear no more! These clips would be perfect sewn on to a belt, or fancied up for a bridal clip, or for brides maids. My favorite is wearing it with jeans and a tee.
What you will need:
– Lighter (I used a wind resistant one)
– Hot glue gun
– Wax paper
– Alligator clip (I used a repurposed one)
If you prefer to sew the beads on you will need:
– Matching thread
PLEASE NOTE: This will be my first REAL tutorial, I will try my best to explain every step. If you find something that isn’t clear, or you do not understand please let me know.
Step 1: Cut a strip of your silk, you will not need too much.
Step 2: Cut a square from the strip. Mine was more of a rectangle. There is no set measurement, just eye-ball it. Remember you cannot screw this up!
Step 3: Use your lighter to heat seal (Burn) the edges of the silk. this will cause the silk to curve in and picker around the rim. Be sure to burn on the silky side, for that is the side you want to be the inside you your flower.
Step 4: Now you need to cut a slightly smaller rectangle. Make a slightly smaller circle out of that rectangle.
Step 5: Heat seal the smaller circle’s edges. Now you will have 2 circles one small enough to fit inside the larger one. If not then burn the smaller ones edges a little bit more, this will shrink it some more. BEWARE, too much heat will cause holes to form in your silk!
Step 6: Repeat making smaller rectangles and circles. Heat seal their edges and stack them inside one another by size, largest on the bottom, smallest on the top. This will give you the shape of a flower.
Step 7: I will show a picture of sewing the beads on. But to glue the beads on just add a dot of hot glue on to the bead and place them in the center of the smallest circle. Position anyway you like, then move on to Step 8.
Step 8: Cut a cirle of felt to hide your stitches. Even if you hot glued your beads on I think the felt makes it look more professional. But the felt is your choice.
Step 9: Fire up your glue gun and hot glue your felt circle to the back of your flower, where you will be placing your clip.
Step 10: Fold your wax paper and place your alligator clip onto it, this makes it easier to prevent sticking, and an unusable clip.
Step 11: Hot glue your alligator clip to your flower.
Step 12: Pull off any glue strings, flip over and admire your handy work!
Step 13: Now wear your amazing creation!
I hope you all enjoy this tutorial, and love these little flowers! I know I do!
